Data Mirroring, Striping with and without parity

Mirroring, Striping and Striping with parity are the three fundamental RAID techniques and the various RAID types (RAID 5, 6 etc) can use one or more of these techniques.

Data mirroring stores the same data across two hard drives which provides redundancy and read speed.
Upside: - Redundant - if a single drive fails, the other drive still has the data. Great on read I/O performance and read throughput because it can independently process two read requests at the same time.
Downside: - Your capacity is only half of the total capacity of all your hard drives expensive.

Striping the data distributes the data across multiple hard drives.
Upside: - Scales very well on read and write throughput for single tasks but it has less read throughput than data mirroring when processing multiple tasks.
Downside: - Rarely used by itself because it provides zero fault tolerance and a single drive failure causes not only the data on that drive to fail, but the entire RAID array.

Striping with parity solves the reliability problem at the expense of some capacity and a big hit on write IOPS and write throughput. Data is striped across multiple hard drives just like normal data striping but a parity is generated and stored on one or more hard drives. Parity data allows a RAID volume to be reconstructed if one (sometimes two) hard drives fail within the array.
Upside: - Data is safe – Loss of data is less likely
Downside: - Can be expensive – With drive capacities increasing – xTB is no longer available for use.

SATA, SAS and Fibre RAID Arrays

In the last eight years there has been a tremendous growth in the need to purchase storage; this is true for every business and industry.

For some time there were only two technologies used in RAID arrays - Fibre and SCSI. NexSAN Technologies was the first ton introduce an array named the "ATABoy" that utilized PATA Drives. It took less than two years for others to accept this as an option for secondary storage and soon this morphed to the newer SATA drives. In the last year or so, SCSI drives are slowly been replaced by the newer SAS drives. In another post I will discuss the drives in great depth.

Sunstar Company does work with a number of vendors that we believe off terrific solutions encompassing all drive technologies and supporting both Fibre and iSCSI connectivity.

Some of the manufacturers that we offer to our clients are; NexSAN Technologies, iQstor, StoreVault (a NetApp Co.), IBM Storage, Arena Products , EqualLogic, Reldata, OnStor and Overland Storage.

Each have their strength in specific markets. Please fee free to contact us and we can point out the solutions that we feel will best fit your needs.

Specifically:
NexSAN offers:
  • SATABoy - Limited to 14 SATA Drives - Single or Dual Controller - Up to 4 Fibre & 4 iSCSI ports
  • SASBoy - Limited to 14 SAS Drives - Single or Dual Controller - Up to 4 Fibre & 4 iSCSI ports
  • SATABeast - Limited to 42 SATA Drives - Single or Dual Controller - Up to 4 Fibre & 4 iSCSI ports
  • SATABeastXi - Limited to 14 SATA Drives - Single or Dual Controller - Up to 4 Fibre & 4 iSCSI ports (For Mac - Apple)
  • DATABeast - Fully configured SAN in a rack with multiple of any of the above solutions

iQstor offers:

  • iQ2280 - 15 SATA Drives - Single or Dual Controller - Up to 4 Fibre ports - Up to 240 drives (Fibre or SATA), using expansion chassis
  • iQ2880 - 15 Fibre Drives - Single or Dual Controller - Up to 4 Fibre ports - Up to 240 drives (Fibre or SATA), using expansion chassis
  • iQ2850 - 15 Fibre or SATA Drives - Single or Dual Controller - Up to 4 iSCSI ports - Up to 240 drives (Fibre or SATA), using expansion chassis

StoreVault offers:

Data De-Duplication

Data de-duplication as the process removing redundant files, bytes or blocks of data to ensure that only ‘unique’ data is stored.

In essence our goal is to:
  1. Eliminates failed backups and restores
  2. Greatly reduces your backup window
  3. Work with existing backup application

Sunstar Company has teamed up with ExaGrid

Read the frequently asked questions and in all likelyhood ExaGrids scalable solution will work for you.

http://www.sunstarco.com/Storage/Exagrid/ExaGrid_Questions.htm

ExaGrid's byte-level data de-duplication technology stores changes from backup to backup instead of storing full file copies. This unique approach reduces the disk space required by 10 to 50:1, or more, delivering unparalleled cost savings and performance.

  1. Disk-based backup with compression/data de-duplication at the cost of tape
  2. Optional WAN-efficient offsite system for tape replacement/disaster recovery

Thank You

Sunstar Company in Southern California

Sunstar Company was founded in the early 1980's and boy having things changed!
We primarily focus on back up and storage. We recognize that this is quite a large swath in the computer industry however we do focus primarily on both disk and tape solutions.

Storage Area Networks, Direct Attached Storage and Network Attached Storage are the terms that you are most likely to hear.

  • Storage Area Networks - SAN's are most likely to be attached via Fibre or more recently via iSCSI connectivity. For block level activity and giving acces to multiple file server and a significant number of clients.
  • Direct Attached Storage - A DAS is most likely to be attached via Fibre or SCSI connectivity. Not seen as often as in the past. Directly attached to a single Server.
  • Network Attached Server - NAS is most poular with users where data is file based. Not recommended when a database is in use. Attaches via ethernet. Often combined with iSCSI.

Regarding Tape. We offer both Tape Automation (multiple drives and media) or a single tape option. We work with different tape technologies, current and end of life. These drives are offered with manufacturers warranties or limited warranties for refurbished drives. Sunstar does repair most tape drives and we have the ability to transfer data from one technology to another.
