There are many reasons for this - in no particular order.
- Cost to implement - very little additional infrastructure. If you have a Gigabit network - a switch with an extra port - installation is quick and easy. Not necessary to purchase additional hardware in most cases.
- Ease of installation - Most manufacturers have installed a simple " follow me" wizard and hopefully within 30 minutes you are up.
- iSCSI is fast and unless you have a bandwidth-intensive application (e.g., streaming media) this should be ample.
- Consolidate hardware and resources through advanced technology
- Flexible: Eliminates physical limitations of dedicated storage networks
- Remote Access: Allows to quickly and easily manage and allocate server and storage resources.
- Reliable: Multiple-redundant drives for reliable storage of the most sensitive of data
As for Applications:
- Storage networks
- Upgrade existing Fiber Channel Networks to iSCSI
- Server Virtualization
- Multi-site Replication: Increases redundancy and allows for hardware to communicate without being physically connected.
- Offsite Backup
